Who is Flaregrump?

Flaregrump is the feeling of anger, that hot, fiery rush that rises up when something feels unfair, frustrating, or just too much. Flaregrump isn’t “bad.”

Flaregrump shows us when our boundaries have been crossed, or when something matters deeply to us. But when he gets too big, he can roar, stomp, and flare up in ways that feel scary for children (and adults too).

How can we help our Children learn about Flaregrump?

🤔Start With Curiosity

Try asking your child:

  • “Where do you feel Flaregrump in your body right now?” (Hands? Face? Chest? Tummy?)

  • “If Flaregrump had a colour today, what would it be?” (Fiery red? Burning orange? Smoky black?)

  • “What do you think Flaregrump is trying to tell us

🧰Use a Flaregrump Toolkit

Underneath the fire, Flaregrump is really saying: “Something feels unfair, and I need help.”

You could help by:

  • Safe release: stomping feet, squeezing playdough, jumping.

  • Cool-down tools: a drink of water, a cool cloth, runign hands under cld water or stepping outside.

  • Draw your fire: scribble big, bold flames and then colour them cooling down into softer shades.

  • Flaregrump’s comfort kit: headphones, stress ball, glitter jar, or a “calm corner” where anger can shrink safely.

Stay grounded. Model calm breathing and a steady voice,  your calm can help soothe the storm.

Name the feeling, not the behaviour. “I can see Flaregrump/anger is really big right now. That makes sense.”

Offer safe outlets, not punishments. Anger is energy so guide it towards safe release.

Reflect after, not during. Once calm, talk gently: “Flaregrump got big today. What helped him cool down?”

 🧠Remember

Anger is a normal, healthy emotion. What matters is showing children safe ways to feel and express it.

A good parent, carer, or educator doesn’t have to prevent Flaregrump, but they can model how to notice, name, express how they are feeling and cool him down with kindness.

Every flare-up is a chance to teach resilience, repair, and self-compassion.
