The Bodyguard's File | The Flaregrump Files, Lesson 1 | Printable Comic Story for KS2
Everyone gets angry. And anger has a job to do.
The Emp Detective Agency has cracked hundreds of cases. This morning, a brand-new file lands on Marlow's desk. It's marked FLAREGRUMP.
The hot face. The shouting. The slammed doors. Most people think Flaregrump is a troublemaker. Marlow has news for his new unit: he's something else entirely.
Flaregrump is a bodyguard. When something feels unfair, when someone might hurt you, or when a rule gets broken, he leaps in to defend you. He's loyal. He's brave. He cares.
So what's the problem? Sometimes he's so keen to protect you that he takes over. Your voice. Your hands. Your whole body. Thinking clearly gets harder, and it can feel as though there's only one choice.
This story doesn't ask children to get rid of anger. It asks them to understand it. Anger is a visitor. It visits you. It isn't who you are.
This is the first lesson in The Flaregrump Files, our KS2 anger programme from The Emp Detective Agency. Marlow gives each detective a notebook, a badge, a magnifying glass and a case folder. Over the series they learn to spot Flaregrump arriving, what sets him off, how he changes their bodies and thoughts, and the biggest secret of all: what he's really trying to protect.
Created by Dr Nat, an Educational and Child Psychologist with 25 years in education. It draws on narrative approaches, emotion coaching and current emotion science, so children can talk about anger without shame and learn what to do with it.
Made for the classroom, small groups, ELSA sessions and home.
